“Faceless accounts” keep tagging him in Bengal-related posts

As counting trends and political discussions around West Bengal gained attention, Vir Das noticed a familiar pattern returning on social media.

Anonymous users, often without profile details, started tagging him in posts about events in Bengal implying a connection or responsibility simply because of his surname.

In his post on X, he pointed out this repeated habit, saying he is regularly tagged whenever something happens in Bengal. He also highlighted how these messages often come from unidentified or “faceless” accounts, where people casually link him to regional issues without any real basis.

“I’m half UP, half Bihari,” says Vir Das

Putting an end to the confusion, Vir Das openly clarified his background in a post shared on May 4. He wrote, “Just putting it out there before today unfolds. My name is Das, but I’m actually not Bengali. I’m half UP, half Bihari.”

With this, he distanced himself from the assumption that his surname automatically connects him to Bengal.
